Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
