Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior official said the attack made him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
